Seven Easy Ways to Drink More Water Throughout the Day

Most people know that they need to be adequately hydrated for their bodies to function properly. However, they also know it is a whole lot easier said than done. This is especially true for those who don't enjoy the taste of water (or just prefer to drink something else). No matter your reasoning, the truth is many of us need to find ways to drink more water throughout the day.

Read on to discover seven easy ways to stay hydrated all day long.

Know how much you really need to drink.

Before you set any hydration goals, you should understand how much water your body needs per day. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) recommends

  • 90 ounces a day for women
  • 125 ounces a day for men

However, you also need to consider things like your activity level, your health, and how hot it is outside. For example, if you exercise frequently, you will need to increase your water intake. The same goes if you are outside in the heat all day. In addition, there are certain medical conditions that may require you to drink more water each day to keep yourself hydrated.

Keep a reusable water bottle handy.

To drink more, you need to have your water close by and handy. This means that, even if you are out running errands, you need to have water along.

By purchasing a reusable water bottle (one that you love), you’re more likely to carry water with you, no matter what you are doing. Reusable bottles come in so many different styles and colors that you should find one that you want to carry around. Many have sayings, or you can even personalize one with a picture, so you can't wait to show it off!

You are also more likely to remember to drink water because you will see it sitting by your side! If you leave it at home, you aren't going to be drinking throughout the day. So, make sure that you find a bottle that you love and take it with you in order to stay adequately hydrated.

Make sure that you are drinking throughout the day.

One way to help you reach your hydration goal is to consume small amounts of water throughout your entire day. For example, sipping water during your commute to and from the office or while you're on the phone at work makes it easier to consume more water. You may even want to set a timer to help you remember to drink a set amount every hour or so. You will be amazed at how much water you can drink if you consciously drink small amounts throughout the day!

Drinking all day also helps to keep your mouth from getting dry and can make your breath fresher. But, again, the easiest way to do this is by having your water bottle right by your side, no matter where you are.

Replace another drink with water.

If you are tempted to grab a soda or juice instead of water, try replacing at least one of those with water. After a few days, you may be able to replace a second drink. In another week or so, you might be able to replace three drinks until you get to the point that you are mainly drinking water.

Hopefully, this will help you realize that water is healthier for you, and you will be less inclined to drink other beverages. You may even start to turn to water when you are thirsty.

Drink one glass of water before each meal.

One easy way to increase the amount of water you consume is to drink a glass of water before each meal. Doing so adds in extra ounces just by making a single change.

This added water may even help with your weight because you won't have to eat as much to fill up your stomach. You will find yourself eating less with each meal because you started off with a glass of water.

You can also get more water intake by eating certain foods.

Many foods are high in water content, including several fruits and vegetables. Some of the best ones to eat include:

  • Lettuce
  • Celery
  • Zucchini
  • Cabbage
  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Honeydew

Not only will you have more water in your diet, but all of these are also great for your overall health. This is because they contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep you healthy.

Add flavor to your water.

If you struggle to drink water because you don't like the taste, you may want to add some flavor. For example, you can add fresh fruit directly to your water to give it a little taste or consider using water infusion drops.
